Sino alla sua prossima partenza per Los Angeles, Elvis va al cinema praticamente ogni sera. In queste sere, per la prima volta, Elvis guarda il film “Patton” con George C. Scott. Il film lo impressiona talmente tanto, che Elvis memorizza alla perfezione il drammatico discorso iniziale del film, esattamente come successe con quello del Generale Mc Arthur nel film “Farewell Adress”.

E’ quasi certo, che sia stato questo film, ad averlo spinto a cercare Omar Bradley, un generale della II Guerra Mondiale, in pensione nelle vicinanze di Beverly Hills.

A Graceland, Elvis fa abbattere due stanze e un bagno, per costruire un appartamento per Charlie Hodge. I lavori costeranno $3.900.

La canzone “Suspicious Mind” è al 4° posto della classifica in U.K.

Elvis vola a Los Angeles, accompagnato da Priscilla e Lisa Marie, per prepararsi al suo imminente impegno a Las Vegas.

Elvis festeggia il suo 35° compleanno a Los Angeles.

Allo studio della RCA sul Sunset di Las Vegas, Elvis e la sua band iniziano le prove per i prossimi spettacoli che farà a Las Vegas. Bob Lenning sostituisce Ronnie Tutt alla batteria, che ha lasciato la band per non aver raggiunto un accordo circa il suo compenso. Anche il pianista Larry Morhoback se n’è andato ed è sostituito da Glen D. Hardin, un amico di James Burton, proveniente da Lubbock, Texas, che normalmente suona con il gruppo di Buddy Holly, The Crickets. Anche Ciccy Houston lascia gli Sweet Inspiration e, per il momento, viene sostituita da Ann Williams.

Per il suo secondo ingaggio a Las Vegas, Elvis vuole cambiare il repertorio, primo perché deve essere preparato un altro album live e secondo perché vuole dimostrare la sua preparazione anche sulla musica contemporanea. Tra le alter, aggiunge “Proud Mary” dei Creedence Clearwater Revival, “Polk Salad Annie, di Tony White “Walk A Mile In My Shoes” di Joe South e “Sweeet Caroline” di Neil Diamond. Inoltre inserisce anche qualche sua nuova canzone.

Ancora prove al Sunset di Las Vegas dove Elvis lavora ogni notte per 5 notti consecutive, arrivando in studio alle 19 e lavorando mediamente 5-6 ore, per notte

Con la canzone “Suspicious Mind” Elvis raggiunge il 2° posto della classifica in U.K., la posizione più alta della classifica

Nella sala Conferenze C dell’International Hotel di Las Vegas, iniziano le prove per l’imminente ingaggio, prove che proseguono fino al 23 gennaio. Ogni giorno, gli Imperials e le Sweet Inspiration si uniscono ad Elvis alle 14, mentre la band inizia sempre alle 19.00

A partire da oggi alle 13, le prove si spostano nella showroom dell’hotel. Poiché, nel mese di agosto, Elvis era rimasto molto insoddisfatto del suono, decide di assumere l’ing. Bill Poter per aiutare Felton Jarvis a gestire il suono durante gli spettacoli

Con questo show, Elvis apre il suo secondo tour di 4 settimane.

Questo show è solo su invito per gente dello show business, come Zsa Zsa Gabor e Fats Domino. Per la prima volta Elvis indossa il jumpsuit (costume che diventerà una sua attrazione). Il Jumpsuit gli da maggiore libertà di movimento, soprattutto per le mosse di karate che diventeranno sempre più frequenti. Bill Bellew ha creato 2 di questi jumpsuit, uno bianco e uno nero che vengo prodotti dalla Ice Capades Costumes in Los Angeles. In questo concerto Elvis canta anche “True Love Travels On A Gravel Road”, una canzone che verrà fatta molto raramente in live. Durante lo spettacolo, Elvis presenta Priscilla.

Sin dal primo momento delle prove a Houston, Elvis si rende conto che il sistema del suono è pessimo e la band non riesce a sentirsi. “Non arrabbiarti” dice a Glen D. Hardin “Vai avanti e continua a suonare”

A mezzogiorno Elvis tiene una conferenza stampa all’Astroworld Hotel e parla delle sue radici musicali, di quello che è lo scenario musicale attuale e di come oggi trovi il suono della Sun “divertente”

Elvis fa due show all’Annual Texas Livestock Show all’Astrodome, Houston, TX.

Elvis fa un’entrata scenografica in una jeep scoperta, ma sia durante che dopo il primo show è notevolmente scoraggiato, a causa della acustica scarsa e per quello che lui ritiene un freddo riscontro di pubblico che, oltrettutto è al di sotto delle capacità dello stadio. Tra i due spettacoli, Elvis dichiara “Suppongo che non posso prenderla come sono abituato”. Ma il suo morale si risolleva nello spettacolo della sera grazie al grande riscontro che ottiene da un pubblico composto da 36.299 persone, dove secondo quanto afferma il Los Angeles Time la sua performance è stata “superlativa”

Tornato a Memphis, Elvis viene a sapere che il Colonnello ha fatto un passo indietro sull’evento a pagamento, in quanto la stampa è venuta a saperlo e ne ha parlato. A questo punto l’idea è tenuta in stand-by e sarà sostituita da un film dei concerti, che verrà girato a Las Vegas, dalla M.G.M.

(In seguito questo film verrà chiamato “Elvis: That’s The Way It Is”. Il Colonnello Parker ha ideato questo film per dare la possibilità a molti più fans di assistere ad un concerto di Elvis. Non soddisfatto del risultato quando vede la proiezione di prova del film, perché secondo lui, Elvis non viene valorizzato come dovrebbe essere, Parker decide di fare un nuovo montaggio e questo si nota dal fatto che non è un vero documentario, ma un’insieme di spezzoni di varie scene.

Felton Jarvis inizia a lavorare direttamente per Elvis e lascia così il suo lavoro di produttore alla RCA. Con Elvis non lavorerà solo in studio, ma anche a Las Vegas e in Tour, come produttore autonomo per la RCA, ricevendo un compenso di $750 per ogni master di Elvis che consegnerà, più il 2% di royalties.

L’incastro del contratto è che dovrà fornire almeno 15 master dalla prima session, che dovrà iniziare entro tre giorni. Putroppo negli ultimi anni, Elvis è riuscito a registrare un quantità simili di canzoni, in un’unica session, solo agli American Studios.

Felton non intende riportare Elvis agli American Studios, ma sceglie di farlo registrare nello studio B della RCA di Nashville
